Now nothing has been released to the general public yet, but some private footage has been shown to the gaming press. What was shown was so incredible that everyone would have normally though it was CGI, but the camera angles suggest that it may actually be in-game footage. David Jaffe (GOW, Twisted Metal creator) says that what he saw was EVEN better than Gears 2 (Xbox's best looking game).
Now for you lads unfortunate enough not to have played GOW 1 or 2, those were arguably two of the best games ever. My personal all time fave is MGS for PS1 and this one gives it a serious run for it's money. The long awaited God of War III will drop sometime in 2009.

Okay so you know what’s up then. This game is gonna be a biggie.
*Geek Fact: Did you know during development Kratos was a girl at one point? That’s where Heavenly Sword’s Nariko's inspiration comes from. It’s funny with the baldie, beard and no bullshit stare, Kratos look a lot like yours truly. A wise decision IMO.

Here's what's known so far:
"Graphically it is going to set a new standard. Easily eclipsing the detail in Gears of War 2 and Uncharted... God of War 3 is set to offer up the most cinematic experiences ever! He was over the moon about how good it looked... he said there is nothing that comes remotely close. "The detail is crafted with highest of care and the animations sell the experience like nothing you've ever seen".
He was told that the game will be 1080P and 60FPS... He then said it was obvious the footage he seen wasn't, though. So, if they're shooting for 1080P and 60fps and haven't hit it yet that's a good thing... since the game already looks better than anything out there. This is a win for the gamers.
Kratos doesn't look like the only playable in the game. Apparently their might be someone along for the ride... His brother perhaps???
Gameplay remains somewhat the same but with tweaks that begged to be put in from the beginning. The camera is now placed much closer and everything is bigger and only on "certain" instances does the camera pan way out on you. He explained to me there are 3 new mechanics to the gameplay engine that drastically alter it for different players.
There will be an online mode... Gladiator mode and co-op are two he touched upon.
The area he has seen shows Kratos battling hordes of rotting corpses in a highly detailed cemetery. There is a a sea supplying eerie fog as the backdrop, along with dead trees and headstones. The sky has a reddish hue to it but real time storm clouds act as a blanket of night for the setting.
He said the zombies realistically came up through the ground, disruptting the dirt and clawed their way into battle. He said the detail and quality of work represented in this was something he'd never seen in a video game before. After Kratos had ripped through the onslaught of undead he comes to a tomb and a battle rages on between he and a reaper-like boss battle.
Described as one of the most cinematic fights in gaming history, it came together by actual fighting, timed button presses but also another brand new mechanic he didn't elaborate on further. He said the there will be 100% be a playable demo for the PSN in the coming months ahead. Maybe sooner than later???
He ended it by saying the trailer we see at the VGA's isn't going to be anything to get too excited about and will end up showcasing very little of the game. And finally, while highly impressed with how the game looks and seems to play, he said he was hoping to have seen more than the cemetery in wish he feels probably starts the game off or finds its mark shortly afterwards. He said the fighting and sheer amount of enemies on screen is unheard of and was epic enough to open up the game, but he wouldn't be surprised if they didn't toss in something even bigger than what he seen."

I'll make a decision from the demo.
I'm more interested in the online play...pretty much all games I purchase. New era.

Leaked facts...
Unlike God of War 1 and 2 where there are only 15 enemies on screen, there will now be around 50 this time.
You can ride monsters like the Cyclops and “control”.
Kratos on the PS2 used 5,000 polygons, now he uses 20,000.
They made the weapons “better” so it adds more variety. Like with a different weapon, you don’t get just a couple different attacks, but a whole different play style.
The lion gauntlets are called Cestus.
Enemy AI’s are a lot smarter. Some of the enemies will be “commanders” and control the other grunts.
Enemies will look different, even if they’re the same type. Like, even though the skeleton soldiers are in the same category, they will have varied looks, so it’s not like everyone looks the same.
More boss fights than GoW 1, but less than GoW 2.
No multiplayer.
Hades boss fight confirmed.
I've seen the leaked scans from the upcoming Game Informer and here's what the developers had to say:
Quote :
Until Kratos, Sony lacked a charater that could stand toe to toe with Mario and Master Chief.
True, Sony hasn't had a real mascot since Crash Bandicoot on PS1. Right now we don't have an official character to identifty with. It's between Kratos, the Helghast soldier from K2 and Sackboy and I bet Sony will go with the latter. I'd choose Kratos cause the Helghast soldier isn't a definite character and Sackboy is too cutesy. Plus the '3 isn't a toy, so notcute stuff.
Quote :
We want this to be the game that shows people what Sony can do.
Word on the net is that the previews have been shown to a select few and they say the it's the best looking game EVER, even better than Gears 2 and K2!
Quote :
Unlike games like Zeld and Metroid, God of War III lets players retain many abilities acquired in the previous installments.
This is great and the way it should be, dude is ALMIGHTY THE God of War and defeated Aries himself. Dude shouldn't loose any abilies.
Quote :
...this story is written to close the book on the trilogy
So I guess any further installments will be prequels?

Okay, lads, the first big bit of information. Per Hardcore Gamer:
Quote :
Hardcore Gamer was invited to LA to check out the first ever demo of God of War III. The first two God of War titles were two of the best looking games on the PS2. God of War III simply blows them away. To put it in perspective, the model of Almighty Kratos alone is so advanced that if you were to put just him on a PS2 disc, the PS2 would be unable to handle it. Graphically, God of War III may just be the best looking game this generation.
Everything in the game seems like it shouldn’t be running as smooth as it is. Even the smallest character in God of War III seems advanced and alive. All of the landscapes and buildings are beautiful and incredibly realistic. In fact, many of the environments are literally alive.
God of War III will mostly be fought on huge creatures known as Titans. Unfortunately, not much is known about the Titans yet. One of the Titans that we do know about is Gaia. Gaia is a huge rock-type creature that has a living forest on it. While on Gaia, it seems as if you are in a normal forest. However, there is always a little hint of the living creature you’re actually on, which really brings the game alive
The graphics of God of War III are incredible, but the gameplay is equally as impressive. If you’ve played either of the first two God of War games, you’ll basically know what to expect. The gameplay model is solid enough that it didn’t need to be drastically changed. The additions, though, take it to the next level.
The enemies are already more intelligent than the average game baddie, but their skills can increase when a commander-type enemy comes out. He’ll rally them and they’ll work together with more strategy. Luckily, there are plenty of awesome moves that you can combat them with. For instance, you’ll be able to grab enemies and use them as a battery ram, which looks really cool.
The best combat addition, though, are the moves that are enemy specific. If you’re fighting a cyclops, for example, you’ll be able to rip its eye out of the socket. You’ll also fight a chimera in the game that changes forms as you cut different parts off. The best new combat feature, though, is the ability to disembowel. It’s not known how often or to which enemies you’ll be able to use this new feature. In one of the sequences shown, Kratos is fighting a large centaur that he finally pins to the ground. He takes out a blade and rips open his stomach, revealing his entrails. If more of God of War III is like this, it could definitely be one of the goriest games yet.
Although God of War III is still awhile off, it’s already looking to be one of the best titles of this generation. The graphics are unmatched and the gameplay looks even more fun and solid than its predecessors. Hopefully the entire game will end up as impressive as this early gameplay. If it does, the PS3 should finally have the game it needs."
