As 2009 approaches it's becoming more clear than ever that the PS3 will finally realize its full potential:
Blu-ray Discs will see a price drop as the format becomes more commonplace, they have already increased their market share versus DVD’s a lot in the last month since Black Friday. Expect both to drop anywhere from $5-$10 across the board. BD’s at this stage in infancy are way further ahead of DVD’s at the same time. Remember when DVD players cost a grip?!!
PlayStation Home is finally here and will continue to evolve. Just take a look at the XMB and PSN, think about what it was last year as opposed to now. Firmware updates will be fewer and far between, but will each add or adjust something major. Home on the other hand is a "working-beta" just like Gmail and will be updated on a regular basis. Home is unique to us and no other system has anything like it.
God of War 3, Killzone 2, Gran Turismo 5, Uncharted 2, White Knight Chronicles, Heavy Rain, Ratchet & Clank Future 2 are among the AAA exclusives that we should be getting next year. While LameBox has maxed out already with Gears 2, the ‘3 is JUST coming into its own. Developers are finally getting the hang of the 3’s unique tech and writing for it will be easier. Therefore, prepare for some serious shit in ’09!!!
Third-party developers are learning the 3's architecture as well and we will no longer be getting ports of Xbox 360’s games. Developers will make our games first and that’ll translate into better looking and playing games taking full advantage of all the tools at their disposal.
While nothing is official, expect the PlayStation to see a price cut sometime in 2009. Microsoft's lowered pricing of the Xbox 360 is doubtful to be repeated in 2009. The ‘3 takes 53% less money to make than in its inception, so a price cut is coming, probably by this summer.
PlayTV. This handy device turns the PS3 into a DVR. It was released in Europe in the fourth quarter of 2008 and will release in Australia in early 2009. Unfortunately, with a crowded cable and satellite market, the US is left out on this one. No word yet on if PlayTV will make it to the US, but if it does make it to America, don't expect it in 2009.
3-D games and BD’s coming!! PS3 will be getting stereoscopic 3-D support sometime next year! The tech is already there, all we need is a firmware update to get it started. This is yet another feature that will be unique to the ‘3 as opposed to other systems.
